Dr. Kevin G. Kempers has called Boise home since 1999, after he completed his six-year oral surgery residency and medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
He grew up in western Colorado and graduated with a biology degree from Colorado College in 1988. He then attended and the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and obtained a four-year dental degree. Following his dental school training he completed a year of hospital-based dentistry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.
He joined Boise Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery group and practiced with Dr. Bruce Morrison from 1999 until 2010. Drs. Kempers & Nelson combined their practices and formed Whitewater Oral Surgery Group in 2014 and began practicing together in the new location in January 2015.
Dr. Kempers is board certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He was selected to serve a 5-year term as a member of the prestigious ABOMS examination committee in 2014. He is the past-President of the Idaho State Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, 2003-2004, and the Southwest Idaho Dental Society, 2004-2005. He currently serves as a member of the ad-hoc Committee on Anesthesia at the Idaho State Board of Dentistry. Dr. Kempers was recently inducted into the selective group of International College of Dentists.
Kevin enjoys spending time with his family. He married his wife Chris in 1994, and they have three boys. They enjoy alpine skiing, biking, backpacking, traveling and attending the boys’ school and sporting events.
Dr. Eric W. Nelson is a native of Idaho. He completed his medical degree at Vanderbilt University. His general surgery internship and maxillofacial residency program were completed at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He served as chief resident of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Vanderbilt from 1998 – 1999. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Utah and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa.
Dr. Nelson is board certified and a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is currently serving as the delegate to the American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from Idaho, representing all of Idaho’s Oral surgeons. He also assists with anesthesia peer review in the state of Idaho. He is on faculty with Idaho State University teaching dental graduates advanced training here in Boise.
Specializing in oral implantology, Dr. Nelson lectures locally and nationally on dental implants and bone grafting. He is a Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), meeting their strict criteria for that distinction.
Dr. Nelson is a member of both St. Luke’s and St. Alphonsus facial trauma teams. He is a member of the American Association of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons performing facial cosmetic surgery. He’s also member of the American dental Association and the Idaho State dental Association. He is licensed as both a medical doctor at the dentist in the State of Idaho.
In 2005 he was one of four surgeons’ chosen to perform cleft lip and palate surgery for Chinese Children’s Adoption International. The team traveled to Xining, China to perform cleft lip and palate surgeries on orphans.
Dr. Nelson resides in Boise with his wife and three children. Together they enjoy family outings, running, skiing, fishing, biking and travel.
Dr. Justin Hastings grew up in Boise, moving here from California with his family in 1992. He graduated from Borah High School in 2000, after which he obtained his college degree in biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an All-American baseball player in high school and carried his love for the game into college. He pitched for Cypress College in California before attending UCSB. Following graduation, he attended New York University College of Dentistry, where he graduated in the top of his class in 2011. In dental school, he was selected to go on dental outreaches in Nicaragua, Grenada and upstate New York. After dental school, he attended Louisiana State University where he obtained his Medical Degree (MD), completed a General Surgery Internship and obtained his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certificate upon completion of residency.
Throughout his intensive residency, he was trained in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom teeth extractions and comprehensive dental implant placement), orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, cosmetic surgery, head and neck pathology and reconstruction, bone grafting, cleft and craniofacial surgery. During his chief year, he was invited to go on a mission trip to Nicaragua where he performed reconstructive surgery, tumor removal, cleft repair and orthognathic surgery on the local population.
Dr. Hastings continues to operate on the cutting edge of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is well-versed in the use of virtual surgical planning and medical modeling. This allows him to treatment plan the surgery prior to the actual operation to ensure the optimal outcome. He uses CT-guided implant placement for placement of single implants all the way to full mouth reconstruction. He also uses CT navigation during procedures ranging from placement of implants for oral reconstruction to the reconstruction of multiple facial fractures following a trauma.
As part of Whitewater Oral Surgery Dr. Hastings continues to use the full scope of his training in his daily practice. He performs dentoalveolar surgery, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, bone grafting, dental implants, oral pathology and facial trauma, as well as all other surgical procedures pertaining to the head and neck.
Dr. Hastings enjoys spending time with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Kaylee (2 years) and Hunter (8 months). He also has two crazy German Shorthair Pointers, Moose and Remi. As a family they are always looking for new adventures and fun places where the dogs can run off their abundant energy. His entire family loves exploring all that Idaho has to offer including camping, hiking, skiing, hunting and fishing.
